23 Jun Visit To City Vineyard The Hague

Some 10 NCCC members gathered on a rainy afternoon under a cosy outdoor roof garden in ‘the Haagse Stadswijngaard’ for a tasting.
It all started with a wild and out-of-the-box idea: a winery in the beautiful city of The Hague in an area where you would least expect it. In the 'Laak' quarter right next to the old, inland harbours, right next to railway station Moerwijk. On that spot, grapes have been growing and have been cultivated since 2014. Protected by the railway embankment, nurtured with love and care, the vines are looked after by volunteers who are learning together what it is like to be a wine-grower.
Wine expert and guide Laura Geurs presented several white 070wines and two grappas which are locally produced and bottled. She outlined the challenges of The Hague soil, sea climate and annually challenging weather conditions.
Since Laura studied international law at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in the late nineties, some members discovered mutual friends and study connections. Laura’s interest and enthusiasm in travel, cultures (especially Canada) and nature, together with her broad knowledge of wine-production made this a lively, interactive event which may see a follow-up after the fall harvest and a tasting of the red 070wines.
Laura also told something of her personal story about living and studying in Canada. She has written a book, "Thirty years on the road" about her travel, work, and study career. The book was available for sale (however, only in Dutch).
