Stigterstaal - Winner of NCCC Business of the Year Award 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Leiden, The Netherlands, 8th December, 2025] Julie Allen, Executive Director of the Netherlands Canada Chamber of Commerce (NCCC) announces that Dutch-based Stigterstaal are the recipients of this years Business of the Year Award. The Award was presented by Canadian Ambassador Hugh Adsett, during the NCCC Annual Luncheon on 8th December 2025.

Julie Allen (NCCC), Lex Smaal (Stigterstaal), Ambassador Adsett, Gerben Cozijnsen (Stigterstaal) and Melanie ter Meulen (NCCC) pose with the Award

Stigterstaal are based in Gorinchem, Netherlands and are a leading provider of high-quality shipbuilding steel. They have been working hard in Quebec and Ontario to enter the Canadian market and last month moved into their newly built warehouse and office in Woodstock, Ontario.

Apart from their efforts to make the steel industry as green as possible, there were three main elements that make them worthy of this recognition;

  • Authentic Family Business Values – they operate as a true family-run company, building long-term, trusted relationships with both customers and suppliers, creating a strong and resilient supply chain.
  • Excellence in Complex Projects – specialising in challenging orders with demanding specifications and rapid delivery, supported by extensive stock in diverse dimensions and grades, all backed by certified quality with 3.2 inspection certificates.
  • Global Expertise & Flexibility – leverages a worldwide network of first-class steel mills, deep shipbuilding expertise, and comprehensive free stock to ensure the right balance of flow, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for every project.

The annual NCCC Business of the Year Award recognizes the efforts and successes of both Canadian and Dutch companies and is presented to a company which has had outstanding achievements in the market, focuses on Dutch/Canadian expansion or shows a new, innovative approach to a particular problem.

Each year, a theme is chosen and a number of companies that are in line with that theme are considered. This year the theme was "the green economy". Companies do not have to be a member of the NCCC to be nominated, but they must be active in both Canada and the Netherlands and must promote trade and cultural exchange between the two countries.

"Stigterstaal is committed to being a dedicated sustainable supplier in the shipbuilding and offshore industries. By investing in resilient supply chains, embracing digital innovation, and prioritizing local sourcing, the company actively reduces its environmental footprint," said Allen. "Stigterstaal’s partnerships—such as re-establishing domestic steel supply chains in Canada—help cut transport emissions and delivery times while strengthening local economies."

Beyond environmental responsibility, Stigterstaal supports social sustainability through initiatives like the Peter Smaal Foundation, which promotes education, culture, and science. Together, these efforts reflect Stigterstaal’s vision of combining industrial strength with a greener, more responsible future.
