A moving and true story about a small Canadian community that welcomed the world on September 11, 2001

On 23 and 24 October, Musicalgroep The Cast will bring the internationally acclaimed musical Come From Away to the Kennemer Theater in Beverwijk. The musical tells the true story of thousands of airline passengers who, following the events of September 11, 2001, were stranded in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland. It is a heartwarming story about hospitality, community and humanity – values that many people strongly associate with Canada.

This autumn, 25 years after the attacks in the United States, musical group The Cast Castricum brings the remarkable true story of Come From Away to the Kennemer Theater in Beverwijk. The Cast will share this heartwarming story, showing how Canadian kindness and compassion can make all the difference in uncertain times.

38 Planes and a warm Canadian welcome

On September 11 2001, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were forced to make emergency landings in the Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland. Overnight, the town’s population doubled. The people of Gander immediately stepped up. They opened their homes and offered food, clothing, comfort, and even much-needed humour. Around the clock. While the world was turned upside down, lifelong friendships were forged between the townspeople and the stranded travellers, known as the “plane people.” When the planes were finally cleared to leave days later, everyone returned to their former lives. But was that really possible? Everything had changed…

The Cast is made up of more than 30 enthusiastic and active members ranging in age from 20 to 65. Some have been involved with the group since its founding in 1990. Supported by professional artistic guidance, we bring a new musical production to the Kennemer Theater every year. While the association has its roots in Castricum, our performers come from across the region. From Alkmaar to Zaandam and from the countryside to the coast, The Cast’s members are just as diverse as the stranded passengers, the “Come From Aways,” featured in this story.
