This year, the largest animation festival of the Netherlands, Kaboom Animation Festival, has a special “Canada In Focus” program. The festival is co-curated by Chris Robinson, Artistic Director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival.

There will be a screening at the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam on Friday March 31st, of the award-winning Canadian animated feature film, Window Horses. The film was written and directed by a Canadian filmmaker, Ann Marie Fleming. It centres around the story of a young Canadian poet invited to perform at a Poetry Festival in Shiraz, Iran. Once in Iran, she finds herself in the company of poets and Persians, all of whom tell her stories about her past, the Iranian father she had assumed abandoned her, and about the nature of poetry itself. Through this awkward experience, Rosie discovers the world, her family and herself. Window Horses is a touching tale that traces the pain, confusion and wonder of visiting one of the most vibrating and fascinating countries on Earth.

Iranian poet, Raouf Alaia, will be reciting Iranian poems, in their original language, prior to the start of the film. Following the film, various activities are also available (with purchase of additional tickets), such as a poetry workshop, a stand-up comedy night (with a Canadian comic), and/or the screening of a classic Japanese animated film.
