19 Jun Canada: additional import tariff on steel derivatives - update
On January 15, 2026, it was announced that as of December 26, 2025, Canada will have an additional rate of 25% on so-called steel derivative products: products that contain steel and are also available within Canada. This tariff is calculated on the full customs value of the product, and therefore not exclusively on the steel component. With this, Canada wants to protect its domestic steel market.
Exception and return
From the Dutch business community there have been several questions about possibilities for exception or a possible refund/return.
Below you will find the most recent publications of the Canadian Customs that explain how and under what circumstances importers can be exempted/be reimbursed for previously paid levies.

Role of Dutch Government
Since the introduction of the tariffs, the embassy and consulates in Canada have raised the issue with the Canadian government. It has also been mentioned at the EU level that tariffs have adverse effects on trade between the two regions.
